Rainy days and double brunches

Every Sunday should start off with a brunch. I started the day brunching at Insomnia in the Annex, a very popular brunch spot. While the eggs benny wasn't the best I have ever had, their hashbrowns are worth a try. Salty, flavourful and oh-so-unique! It's covered in a dry rub before it's tossed in a wet sauce.

Shortly after, Rose and I met up with some lovely ladies and headed to Lakeview 24/hour diner. A staple in Toronto. Knowing that I would be eating the entire day, I decided to opt for textured leggings and loose top.

My skull and crossbones earrings are my new fave.
When I came home, I saw this lovely outfit on Stockholm streetstyle. I was obviously drawn to it, then realizing that it was quite similar to mine. I love emerald green and wish my silk top was emerald too!

The Last of my Green Jacket

I met some friends for drinks after work last week and things got too cray and I lost my jacket. I didn't even realize until the next day (THANK GOD it wasn't my camera, otherwise I'd still be sobbing). The jacket wasn't very expensive but I JUST got it a few weeks ago in Montreal. I miss my jacket. This post will be an ode to my long lost green jacket. Jacket: If you're out there, I miss you. I know we weren't friends for very long, but you made a great impression in my wardrobe. Please holla.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a green cargo-y jacket? I need a replacement!

X marks the spot

The XX at Massey Hall

As some of you may have already guessed, I love the XX. Every XX show sells out in Toronto, but I luckily scored some great seats at Massey Hall. Visiting Massey Hall was a long time coming! It is an institution in Toronto. The acoustics are fantastic.

The XX were fantastic live! They put on a light show and played extensively from their self-titled album. During the set, Jamie Smith created re-mixes of their songs and was an absolute highlight. When Romy and Oliver sing together, it is absolutely haunting. The band was completely humbled by the audience's reaction and love. It made me fall for them even more!

A remix of Fiction from their new Coexist album by Synapson is worth a listen:

Although, I have to say my absolute fave remix is by Matthew Dear version of VCR. Do yourself a favour and check it out below:

Omg I need a Fur Collared Coat

..especially this one by Band of Outsiders. Maybe this topic is not omg worthy but today, in Toronto, was cold. Kat has a wicked fur collared jacket and I want to steal it from her, I just wish we were the same size.

How good do you think my chances are at buying this vintage? Does the faux fur become dingy and smelly?

Check this coat and other versions of this trend below, I`m also digging the Club Monaco option! (more so the 20% student discount)

Salmon Pants

I always have a dilemma on Fridays - since I work at a bank, my office isn't particularly casual Friday friendly but I've always been one to push the envelope. Wearing jeans (even dark jeans) is sometimes too obvious at rule breaking, so I like to go with coloured pants and it seems to do the trick! Also, high-waisted pants make me too hot in the summer, plus they don't work well with my after-work patio beer bloat, so I save them all for the fall. I threw on some necklaces to the work look when I got home to make it "bar-ready" for a friend's birthday.

keepin' it real with the chalkboard wall

You'll soon realize my obsession with silk blouses (here). These American Apparel pants turned out to be great quality, I just throw them in the washer and dryer and the colour doesn't seem to fade at all. I want to get them in a forest green or a mustard too!

what do you guys think about my new Edison bulbs above my counter?

Shoemint review

Shoemint is a new "shopping experience" which combines Rachel Bilson's style with celebrity stylist Nichole Chavez. The shoes are crafted by Steve Madden, a line of shoes that I do enjoy! To access Shoemint you have to sign up using your email address or facebook account. You take a little quiz and the account will generate shoes that reflect your style.

Curious as a Kat, I signed up and perused their shoes for a few months before I decided to take the plunge and purchased a bordeaux patent leather pair of flats. They remind of Ferragamo flats, which I drool about, and they're perfect for work and play! Did you see Rose rocking her Ferragamo flats here?

Here's my shoemint review based on my first purchase.

Pros:
  • Sizes range from size 5-11 and my size (and every other woman on Earth, 7.5) is usually there!
  • Free shipping and returns (if in the USA)
  • Typically real leather or suede
  • The website runs a fair amount of promos. I received $30 off my first pair.
  • The product website provides lots of photos and a video of the shoes
  • True to size and the flat runs narrow, which is great for me!
  • The website allows buyers to leave a review, which I found quite useful
  • I am currently obsessed with Burgundy/Bordeaux/Oxblood
Cons:
  • As a Canadian, we're hit with a $19.99 shipping charge. Luckily, I was not charged duty but I did have to wait a full 10 business days before my package arrived.
  • The rubber sole is fairly thin
  • The middle of the shoe buckles when the shoe is worn
  • Buying shoes online is always tough and there are no showrooms available. This is strictly an online retail experience.
  • If you sign up, be prepared for multiple e-mails daily
Overall: The flats cost $70. The flats were not the best quality flat, but for the price, it sits in the market where Aldo would be. The shoes are made of real leather and I adore the grosgrain detail. Shoemint shoes are cheaper than Steve Madden shoes which I believe to have gone up in price in Canada. I think for the price point, these were a great purchase.

Texture remix

There's no denying it, Fall is here to stay. I layered on my faux fur vest for warmth. Faux fur, faux sure. I consistently find myself purchasing Joe Fresh items even though I find that the fit is a little large for me. The silk blouse in a wine colour is a solid investment that looks great tucked underneath a suit or hanging undone for a dinner with your favourite ladies (in this case, a real classy lady, Rose).

H&M leather look leggings (Similar: here (on sale)) // Joe Fresh Silk Blouse // Urban Outfitters faux fur vest (Similar: here) // Urban Outfitters flats (Similar: here (on sale))
I have been drooling over J Brand's skinny leather jeans forever, but at a price tag of $1000, one can only dream. I picked up my H&M pleather leggings last year at $35 and love them! I wear them day in and day out, throw them in the washer and am pleased as punch with them.

What do you think? Do you think these J Brand's are worth its hefty price tag?

Wool and Leather

I found this 100% wool blazer back in the day when Bridge+Bardot used to be just a vintage pop-up sale from my friend Gurjeet's studio. When I first put it on, I couldn't believe the fit - I always thought that most vintage items ran tiny, since, you know, people were small back then. Well, this previous owner must have been a giant in her day (or maybe it's a dude's blazer?).

I'm wearing it with one of my favourite vintage finds from Timeless Apparel. I couldn't pass up this leather Danier skirt with side detailing even though it fit a little snug (the tag says size 12 though so it proves my little people point).

regretting leaving these paisley silk pants by Sandro
gotta add some serious change room poses!

The Bay: Fall 2012 Trend Report

We had the pleasure of attending The Bay's Trend Report, presented by their fashion director, Suzanne Timmons. Kat and I are both huge fans of The Bay and try to get as many pieces from the "White Space" as possible during the sale season and Bay Days. They've completely transformed the space and have brought in some really great designers like, Sandro, DVF, Equipment, Elizabeth & James, McQ, and not to mention their huge TopShop store.

Suzanne walked us through some of the biggest trends of the season (Kat had touched on some of these trends here):
  • Rich Colour - forest green, oxblood, mustard
  • Statement Prints - florals will never die!
  • Luxurious Texture - tweed, leather, suede, fur, cashmere
  • Black and Bright - the updated colour blocking
  • Baroque - perfect for the holiday season (including office Christmas parties!)

We took some photos of our favourite outfits - ones that we really wanted to rip right off the model's backs and charge through the security guards with.

Rich colour - the key is keeping the look all in the same colour palate
This magenta coat by DKNY is definitely on my shopping list this Fall (buy it here)
Head to toe in Elizabeth & James
I love love loved this mixed florals look

We're loving how Houndstooth is making a come back this season! Here are some cute houndstooth items to add to your collection: Classic black and white; Small houndstooth print; Houndstooth dress and skirt (both on sale!).

Using silk scarves as an accessory is a timeless trick, especially for updating work wardrobes
Luxurious Textures - tweed, leather, fur, and cashmere

I am loving the Sandro camel coat in the middle. Camel coats are sophisticated and a great alternative to black. Check out The Bay's Top 10 coat collection for some other camel options.

Good Travels: Keeping it weird in Portland

Portland, Oregon

Portland is a gem of a town. With a bike, some cash money and an intention to relax, you can really enjoy the city. There are countless articles and blogs out there discussing the different neighbourhoods of Portland. I'd rather share a few photos and tell you how much I enjoy Voodoo Donuts.

Weird and fun facts:
  • There are about 700 licensed food trucks in Portland
  • Portland, Oregon was almost named "Boston, Oregon". A coin flip decided otherwise.
  • Oregon has no sales tax - YES!
  • You cannot pump your own gas. NJ is the only other state that requires gas attendants
  • Portland is known as Rose City and PDX
  • The dream of the 90s is alive in Portland. See evidence here.

Voodoo Donuts

Everyone talks about it, everyone lines up for it and... you should do it. Next time, I will order every flavour and take a bite out of each. Check out the flavours online and admit that you're a bit curious. The imagination that goes into each donut and the storefront is incredible. The donuts are very filling but not in a cloyingly sweet way.

Fashion Inspiration for the Office

via Style.com
Here is some of my fashion inspiration from one of my favourite Canadian street style photographers, Tommy Ton for Style.com, as I think about what I'm going to wear to work this fall season.

Although these pictures were taken from the Spring 2013 shows, I think some of these looks can be translated into the office - geometric shift dress, peter pan collars, leather pencil skirt, and tweed blazers!
